The new owners of the Chicago Cubs are working with automaker Toyota on a sponsorship deal that could put the company's logo on a sign hoisted high above the left-field bleachers in time for the home opener next month.
It's a way to increase revenue for the Cubs. It could also make baseball purists cringe.
"I've been here four months. I've been a lifelong Cubs fan, and anytime you do anything here at Wrigley Field, it gets attention," said Wally Hayward, who took over in November as the Cubs' vice pre

Tyson Ross struck out seven batters in three innings of work, and the A's used a four-run sixth to push past the Arizona Diamondbacks this afternoon, 7-3.
Ross, who just happens to be exactly 20 years plus 1 day younger than the person writing this recap, entered in the sixth inning of a tied ball game.
The Bishop O'Dowd and Cal Berkeley graduate promptly plunked Justin Upton with a pitch, gave up a double to Mark Reynolds (who homered earlier), threw a wild pitch that allowed Upton to score, and walked

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms on a three-year contract with third baseman Mark Reynolds through 2012 with a club option for the 2013 season, according to D-backs' Executive Vice President & General Manager Josh Byrnes.
Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The agreement buys out two of Reynolds' arbitration-eligible years (2011-12) and possibly a third season (2013) if the D-backs exercise the option year in the contract.

For the first time in spring training, Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch's lineup had an Opening Day look to it, with all eight of the club's anticipated everyday players together on Wednesday afternoon.
Hinch wasn't ready to say the same batting order will be used on April 5, but he dropped a few hints about the way he plans to construct the lineup, and it appears some parts are more set in stone than others.
Here's how the first eight hitters lined up Wednesday: 1.

Joe Saunders continued to rebound from a rough start to spring training, giving up one run on five hits in four innings during the Los Angeles Angels' 7-6 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
After an injury-plagued 2009, the left-hander is looking to get back to his 2008 form, when he went 17-7 with a 3.41 ERA.
Saunders overcame early shoulder problems to go 16-7 last season, but his ERA jumped to 4.60.

The Diamondbacks had 16-year-old Wagner Mateo at their minor-league complex for a workout on Monday, having the slugging outfielder take batting practice and face pitchers in front of several of their top evaluators.
Mateo was one of baseball's more coveted Latin American free agents last summer and was set to receive a $3.1 million signing bonus from St. Louis before the Cardinals voided the contract, citing concerns about the vision in Mateo's right eye.
